Within the circumstances - the influx of money from ITV Digital - Worthington's spending was hardly extravagant. He'd spent wisely within a small budget the previous season, kicked out the dead wood and built an efficient team.

He made plenty of good signings in 2003/4 as well - Francis and Edworthy in particular. And Crouch was a national joke before Worthington loaned him in. Huckerby was the crucial signing but he was slotted into an intelligently constructed team.
