Could be the boot sector

Rebuilding that is actually pretty straightforward if 1. you have a recovery disk and 2. you know what you're doing. I'm reluctant to suggest anything further other than get someone over who can see what's going on. DON'T delete/reformat the drive, because I think the situation should be recoverable.

In the future, don't buy Compaq!
