Short version is
you plug your modem into the ADSL connection the techie bloke gives you. Then, rather than plug your modem directly to the pooter, you plug it into the router, then plug the router into one or more computers (so you can have more computers using the same connection). It "routes" a network connection.
In my case I've got a wireless router so from that to the computer is all radio hence the roof terrace thing (I need to cos my house is 3 stories and I'm not wiring that for f**k's sake!).
A lot of ADSL / broadband modems are also routers (therefore no need for the second plugging). But if you only have one computer, just treat it like a modem.
