you're not interested in I'll just tell you it's the broadband version of a modem (probably).

I've got a wireless router so I can sit doing 't interwebby things like watching telly and listening to commentary on my laptop on the roof terrace. But if you only have one compooter, you only need the ASDL (broadband) modem (which may also be a router but it's irrelevant for you).
