It could easily be your RAM upgrade that's causing this (although you'd usually see a definite crash). If you open up System Settings, the General tab will tell you how much RAM it thinks you have. If that's different then repeat the RAM installation procedure to make sure it's seated properly. You can also see if reinstalling your old RAM resolves the problem. And then add your new RAM back in a chip at a time.

You can probably download RAM checking software (perhaps even from RAM vendor sites).
