Well
one person saying one thing, and another person saying another thing isn't double standards - it's two people who disagree.
As far as it goes the manager here seems to have a much wider area of authority than at other clubs. He is given a budget to spend exactly as he sees fit - on loans, wages, agents' fees whatever.
Additionally - if Ferguson has always had to make a case for every player he has signed at manure - then I don't see why Hamilton, or Worthington, or Grant shouldn't do the same. Whilst the rest of the infrastructure remains in place mistakes will still be made - but some would be avoided.
Hughes is a case in point - he was signed to do exactly the same job as Jarrett - and Worthington saw them as being so similar that he felt forced to play an elderly left-back in midfield rather than pair them up. It seems to me that the board would not have sanctioned spending what they would no doubt claim was a million pounds on Hughes if they had been aware of that. It is precisely because of their lack of expertise in footballing matters that they need to question the expert they employ before sanctioning a deal.
