In a Chrimbo tree formation

You create the width with movement. This is something teams like Brazil and Holland worked out years ago. Just because you have a formation doesn't mean you have to stay in that formation the whole game - you just either have to stay in your role (which in the case of the 2 in the 4-3-2-1 is free across half the width of the field), or if you do encroach on another role, the formation should adjust on the fly.
