I think it's partly a generational thing

When I left school (at 18) it never entered my head to go to university because hardly anyone did. I wanted to earn some money, and it hasn't done my career any harm.

Most of the best journalists at Archant are the old school ones who started at 16 rather than the semi literate graduates aged 22+ who get jobs there now.

Having an average degree these days proves little in terms of your intelligence or aptitude for a job (unless it's very focused), but sadly is a requirement for many jobs.

Personally, I would take getting a job and earning some money before going to uni and coming out ?20k in debt, but each to their own.
