Big lad at the back stick - no thanks!
The reason why we've done ok for the last few games is because, for the first time in over two seasons, we've won and kept possession of the ball for the majority of the game.
Players like Croft and Huckerby are big assets - but only if you don't sacrifice the ball winning function of rest of the midfield to fit them into the team. The 4-5-1/4-3-3 thing we've been doing makes perfect sense and has a couple of implications for potential signings.
1. I reckon it'd be a poor idea to recruit a target man. Quite apart from the temptation to play the long ball when we're under pressure, we'd be back to the situation where we'd effectively only have two midfielders trying to win possession.
2. It follows then that, as the midfield is key to the way we're trying to play, that is the area we should look at strengthening. I reckon we need another decent central midfielder and some kind of back up for Croft. Hughes and McVeigh aren't sufficient.
3. If during the course of a game (perhaps we're chasing it) we have the need to stick a big lad up front, the best thing to do would be to play three at the back and stick the Ginger Pele up top.
Got a feeliing though that Worthington doesn't see it that way....
