couple of observations on last nights everton v nookassel game
well, three observations.
first up, i'm pretty sure football commentators have now been instructed to pronounce newcastle as "nookassel", as though they've all undergone some bizarre form of linguistic accommodation, à la steve mcclaren, who famously went native during his time in holland and started speaking english with a dutch accent. they all do it now, without exception. it's quite extraordinary.
right, that's that one off the bench. moving on to hayden hackney.
another commentator gripe, and i make no apologies for having another pop at their tribe. if the cap fits and all that. they seem utterly incapable of referring to the talented former smoggie by his surname alone. it's always the full appellation: "hayden hackney". perhaps it's the irresistible allure of the alliteration, but they simply cannot help themselves. once you notice it, it becomes incredibly irritating.
it's the polar opposite of the whole "Trent" business, where commentators/pundits dispense with alexander-arnold altogether and refer to him simply as "Trent". it's not as though there are hordes of other alexander-arnolds charging about the pitch necessitating such special dispensation, is it?
and thirdly, on a rather more positive note, isn't the hill dickinson stadium an absolute stonker? that's gone to the very top of my footy stadium bucket list. i hope it's not as dissapointing as the spurs one which i found way too corporate and soulless.
