just compulsory issued everyone round here with a plastic food bin

makes we weep that we have morphed into such a pile of w**kers that it is deemed ok to throw food out and not only that but we've set up a complex way to deal with it. weekly collections to boot. why do we always look at the wrong end of the problem and fix it at far more cost than it would have been to takle the source of the problem which is mainly supermarkets.

We're tackling the problem at the wrong end.

supermarkets benefit from determining how food is packaged, promoted and sold. consumers bear the cost of buying more than they need. local authorities inherit the responsibility for collecting whatever gets thrown away.

and the public ultimately helps pay for the whole sorry exercise.

there's something profoundly back to front about that arrangement.

i'm not proposing we abolish supermarkets or return to some imaginary golden age of high-street shopping. But perhaps we ought to question whether endless choice, excessive packaging and the relentless pursuit of convenience have delivered quite the progress we've been promised.

because the real measure of an environmentally responsible society shouldn't be how efficiently it collects its waste. It should be how little waste it produces in the first place.

ever thought about why the high street has largely died on it's arse in the uk? supermarkets and amazons. only the s**t they aren't good at or don't do has stayed on the high street, nail salons, vape shops, tattoo parlours, bookies and barbers.
