Well, a nip to clam the nerves is traditional

but I suppose it depends what sort of situation you find sufficiently serious to warrant having your nerves calmed by the nip.

Going over the top in the trenches, proposing, divorcing, telling your parents you're gay, parachute jumping or getting into an argument with the duke of york - all these warrant a drink to calm your nerves. Especially if they're all happening on the same day.

But if you find you need a nip before crossing the road, or buying a train ticket, or ordering extra paper - you're in trouble
