Canaries Trust sells Norwich City shares to Norfolk Holding

Mark Attanasio’s Norfolk Holdings group has increased its shareholding in Norwich City after agreeing a deal to buy shares from the Canaries Trust.

The Canaries Trust, the club’s third-largest shareholder group, approved the sale by a majority vote at its annual general meeting on Wednesday. The transaction increases the Attanasio-led group’s ownership stake, which stood at approximately 85pc before the deal.

It is the latest step in Norfolk Holdings’ growing control of the club. The group first acquired a minority stake in September 2022, purchasing shares from former director Michael Foulger and other shareholders.

A £59million debt-to-equity conversion, completed in March 2025, then took Norfolk Holdings’ stake to around 85pc and led to long-term majority shareholders Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones stepping back from the board to become honorary lifetime presidents.

A significant proportion of the proceeds from the Trust’s sale will be donated to Norwich City’s charity arm, the Community Sports Foundation, while a smaller amount will help secure the Trust’s long-term future.

Canaries Trust chairman Robin Sainty said the Football Governance Act and the Trust’s memorandum of understanding with the club had helped create the opportunity.

“With the Football Governance Act, along with our Memorandum of Understanding, formalising the Trust's position in terms of engagement with the club, we saw an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to projects to help City fans and the wider community by realising the significant sum currently tied up in our shareholding.”

The Trust will retain a nominal shareholding in Norwich City.

Norwich City executive director Zoe Webber said the agreement recognised the Trust’s continued importance as a supporter voice, while also creating a lasting benefit for the Community Sports Foundation.

“We’re delighted to have reached this agreement with the Canaries Trust and would like to thank their shareholders and members for their ongoing support," she told the club's official channels.

“The Trust continues to play an important role in representing supporters and we are pleased that this transaction will help secure its future.

“The Community Sports Foundation’s work has a positive impact on thousands of people every year, and we are proud that this deal will help support that mission.”
