they should take the lead of other sports and have off-field specialist captians.
like in the nfl for example. strip the on-field captain's repsonsibilites right back to basically just be a wise old head for less expreienced players and leave all aspect of game managemant/team selection to three specialists who use historical and live real time data to influence decision making.
then have 3 specialist off-field captans each focussing their attention on the three specific phases of the game:
an off-field "new ball captain" who focusses onthe first 25 overs of the game, a "spin/middle-overs captain" takes over for the attritional phases, and a "death-overs captain" handles the reverse-swing or late-innings block.
specialist thinkers would control the phases they know best, maximizing tactical efficiency and keeping on-field leaders fresh.
strip the captain entirely of off-field squad building and structural power. the captain is handed 11 players by the selectors and told simply to play. they have no say in pitches, squad selection, or long-term philosophy, converting the captaincy into a pure, short-term game-management shift.
other sports such as nfl have ditched the single omniponent leader and use what they call the "tactical-hub" on-field captains (quarterbacks and defensive leaders) do not design the overarching strategy. instead, they wear helmets equipped with radio audio links to receive live, data-driven play calls directly from the offensive or defensive coordinators in the coaching booth.
the on-field leader's job is purely execution and minor adjustments. MLB uses a simllar approach.
