Why choose someone from within?

If he is going to make such a big difference why didn't he make a stand against Sven's decisions in the first place.

If he makes wholesale changes to the squad he'll be criticised (and rightly so) for not influencing Sven to make those changes in the first place. If he doesn't make any changes he'll be criticised (and rightly so) for not bringing anything new to the table.

It's simply a poor choice of manager.
