Some words from Field in the Pinkun....
Sam Field has only been at Norwich City just over a month, but the experienced midfielder is already relishing life under Philippe Clement and the challenge of a fresh start.
The 27-year-old has spent five years at QPR before a late winter move to Carrow Road as they sought to fill a hole vacated by injuries to Pelle Mattsson and Mirko Topic. The Canaries beat the deadline by seconds to secure his signing.
Field has added some much-needed know-how but also balance to City's midfield, freeing up Kenny McLean to operate in a more expressive role.
Thrown in at the deep end amid an injury crisis, he has embraced the challenge of helping keep Clement’s side upwardly mobile in the Championship, with eight wins from their last 10 games.
"It's been eye-opening and very intense," he said. "There's a reason why he's a top manager. I wasn't here at the start of the season, but I think a lot's happened since then and you can probably see it in the team.
"I'm sure the fans can see it and people are enjoying the football, people are really playing and they're working really hard for each other. That's credit to the manager and his staff. It's only been a month, like I said before, but I've really enjoyed it."
Field hasn’t brought the flair of Paris Maghoma or the directness of Ali Ahmed, but his ballast and simplicity have been a welcome addition to a young City squad in need of experience and composure.
The loanee is under no illusions about what he offers, but he understands how his game can help others around him flourish.
"Look, I know what I can bring to the team. I'm not like Mo scoring a hat-trick. That's brilliant, but if you're asking me to do that, it's probably something's not quite right there," he told the club's official matchday programme.
"I know I can help. I've enjoyed playing with the likes of Kenny, Anis, Jacob and Paris in midfield. I've enjoyed playing with all of them.
"I am here to help the team. If I can play a lot as well, then that's a great combination. Hopefully, long may it continue."
Field has made nearly 200 appearances for QPR since his arrival in January 2021, but opted to leave Loftus Road temporarily in pursuit of more regular minutes after being leapfrogged by other midfield options under Julien Stephan.
He had to display significance patience throughout January, but already feels part of the furniture within City's squad, despite the spell only being a short-term loan agreement until the summer.
"A lot has happened in a month, but I'm really enjoying it," Field said. "I feel like I've settled in and it's a really good group of lads. The staff have been very good, the whole club and set-up, nothing but enjoyed it.
"I'm just looking forward to the next two months, to be honest, just to make the most of it. I've been at QPR for five years. I've been there for a while, this is a new experience and a new challenge.
"Wherever I am, I'm sure other players (are the same) as well, you just want to do well. It doesn't matter if it's permanent or temporary."
His smooth introduction to life at Norwich has enabled him to enjoy the experience of being in new surroundings, aided further by City's progress on the pitch and the strengthening bond between players and supporters.
"There's a lot more off the pitch that you have to think about as well. It was about how quickly I could get sorted and settled down. I know it's only three months, but it can fly by or go really slow if you're not careful," Field said.
"It's flying by, which is a good sign. I feel really settled in and around the city and the area. It's very different to living near London, but it's a nice change. I'm sure when it gets sunnier, we will be by the beach a bit more.
"It's slightly strange and something different. I've had something very similar for five years, so to see the fans week in, week out, midweek, it's always full and energetic.
"It's a nice feeling and I can tell the group here is giving them something to cheer about as well. That's a marriage that goes very well hand in hand."
