apols if ww3...

uk conscription: reserve occupations

you are likely to be *exempt from taking part in the uk element of the donny trump special military operation extravaganza if it tips into world war three if your occupation is one of the following:

doctors and surgeons

nurses and midwives

paramedics and ambulance staff

pharmacists

dentists

firefighters

certain medical researchers and laboratory staff

electrical grid engineers

power station operators

water treatment engineers

gas infrastructure technicians

nuclear power plant specialists

telecommunications network engineers

farmers and farm managers

agricultural machinery operators

livestock and dairy workers

food processing plant workers

food logistics and distribution staff

freight train drivers

hgv drivers

port and dock workers

air traffic controllers

merchant shipping crews

aviation maintenance engineers

police officers

border security personnel

intelligence and security services staff

cybersecurity specialists protecting critical infrastructure

this includes agencies such as mi5 and mi6

other categories commonly exempted in conscription systems worldwide:

students in critical fields (medicine, engineering)

primary caregivers for dependents

people medically unfit for service

some skilled industrial workers (defence manufacturing)

the government would likely require people in a defined age range to register first.

example structure:

all men aged 18–30 must register.

possibly women too depending on policy.

registration would create a national database of potential recruits.

phased call-ups by age cohorts:

instead of drafting everyone at once, the government would likely call people up by age group, usually starting with the youngest adults.

a realistic sequence might look like:

phase age group called up
phase 1 18–20
phase 2 21–23
phase 3 24–26
phase 4 older groups if needed

during ww2, the uk gradually expanded the age range from 20–22 initially to eventually 18–41. so nobody on here then.

of course this wouldn't happen until we had called upon the approx 32-34k uk armed forces reservists available. some of those will be in exempted occupations or medically exempt.

around 8.5 million men were conscripted during ww2 and just shy of 2.5 million women.

the uk population has of course gone up from 47m during ww2 to 67m ish today. it would be unlikely ww3 troop numbers would be as high as ww2 because of advances in warfighting technologies.

*or deferred until the point where students complete college courses etc or we start accruing massive battlefield casualties/deaths.
