"Beleaguered Norwich City bosses have deepened their growing divide with fans by telling them not to abuse the players during what is expected to be another fiery day at Carrow Road.

The club has posted a message on social media warning it will not tolerate "abusive behaviour" during Saturday's Championship match against Leicester City.

The statement - which comes shortly after Shane Duffy, one of the club's most senior players, called a fan a "k**" online - has prompted outrage and criticism among supporters.

One supporter replied: "I don't condone any abuse whatsoever. The supporters would like to remind the club that we shouldn't have to tolerate ineptitude, arrogance and inaction from a board, an executive team and a football manager that thinks it knows better and treats its fanbase like dirt."

Another wrote: "But presumably it's ok for the club's highest earner to abuse fans on social media? Appalling management of the club is the reason for protests.

"Goes without saying that abuse of staff family members is unacceptable but passive threats like this tweet won't make you unaccountable."

Another said: "None of this would be happening if the fans weren't being treated with such contempt by the club."

One fan added: "You accepted Shane Duffy calling fans gimps. Heā€™s not banned from the stadium. Thatā€™s set the precedent. We can say whatever words we want now. You either change that or thatā€™s the rules. Tough."

The club's social media statement said: "The club would like to remind supporters that it will not tolerate abusive behaviour towards its players, their families and staff, or behaviour that has a detrimental impact on other supporters."

The latest row marks a further milestone in the club hierarchy's deteriorating relationship with supporters, amid criticism of performances on the pitch and the way the club is being run.

It comes after heavily contested claims by the club chaplain, Pastor Jon Norman, that "hundreds" of Norwich fans had "shouted horrendous insults" at the "players' wives, children and even young babies" after City's defeat to Hull City last weekend.

His comments have been criticised online by fans who were at the protest and have denied any suggestion of widespread targeting of the players' families.

An EDP reporter who was at the scene when several players and families left the stadium said he did not see any abuse directed at them.

Neither the club nor Mr Norman have responded to requests for further details to substantiate the claim that "hundreds" of supporters behaved in the way alleged.`

It is understood the club has received an allegation that one female relative of a player was called a "whore" by one supporter.

The feeling of disconnect between club and fanbase is growing, with the club sitting in the relegation zone after a barren run of form.

There has also been a fan revolt against the club's high-handed plans to relocate 3,650 season ticket holders as part a stadium makeover with no consultation.

Following the backlash, the plans are on hold but not cancelled."
