It's a bit prototype-y in places.

Baltimore is like a main character in itself, which is similar to The Wire.
Homicide, while gritty, is nowhere near as gritty as The Wire, though, but that's not to it's detriment; it's earlier and a bit like The Wire's big brother. The characters are great; it's procedural without being too formulaic. Give it a watch, if you loved The Wire, you'll definitely enjoy Homicide.
(The Sopranos is the best show of all time, btw, IMO). x
