I know overreacting is what people do on here but let’s not overreact.

The last time we won this division in 2020/21 - by a six point margin - we took home 4 points from our opening 12. The season before that when we finished champions in 2018/19, we took home 5 points from our opening 18. The Championship season is a long season.

Two things are true today - we were poor and Millwall looked good. They are at the moment a better team than us but they’ve had more stability than us in the last eight months, Alex Neil is building on the good work that he did there in the second half of last season, whereas our team - from top to bottom - is pretty new to the Championship. Millwall are picking up where they left off, we are finding our feet. We don’t seem to have bad players but we just don’t - yet- have a solid team. Just as with our League One season though after their poor start, I get the feeling we’ll start to see this team gel.

Hyperbole aside, today’s performance was bad but it was nowhere near as bad as many of the performances last season so let’s not pretend it was. We were shambolic at the back today - probably understandable given the lack of game time together as a team - but there are lessons to be learned there and personally, I didn’t watch this game thinking that these players were beyond hope, which is an improvement on last year at least.

Nobody, surely, expects us to overturn five years of mediocrity at the club overnight. This is going to take time.
