Really important part of any fascist take over

You need to know whether the people with lots of guns - the army, the police - are with you. When the time comes, when ordinary people have had enough and take to the streets to say no more, will you have enough armed goons willing to go on to the streets to shoot their fellow citizens?

Things like this are important dry runs for what follows. Normalise shooting journalists (or students, or foreigners), this time with rubber bullets. Not just "people getting shot in a panic", but shooting with intent and purpose. They shouldn't have been there. They got what they deserved.

When things get more heated, and turn really violent, firing on people with live rounds will just feel like one more step. It's all about slowly lowering people into a hot fascist bath one bit at a time, so they never cry out.

Who wants to watch Christopher Hitchens narrating a real world fascist take over? Saddam this time, taking over the Baath party.

I found this absolutely chilling. (note that this is no way condoning the war in Iraq, or saying it was justified. just to illustrate that this sort of path is well trodden.)

I did wonder how far this sort of thing would work in the US. But the truth is that there are thugs who would love it all over the place. Trump and his supporters have been clear in signalling to them where they need to move to if they want to join in. Leadership of many organisations have been purged and replaced. Lots of people with conscious have and will resign, because they want no part of it. They will just be replaced by people that very much want to be part of it. Indeed we have people like this posting on this very board don't we? Given half a chance, some of us would LOVE to have a free hand to shoot "undesireables".
