He won't voluntarily leave office alive
We know what happens when the US does this on tariffs because it's done it before, under Hoover in the 1930s. The Smoot–Hawley Act was quite similar to what The Don has done and most economists agree was the key factor in the Great Depression.
The mistake is to assume that bad things for America equals bad things for Donny.
The more things go to s**t, the more he will blame The Other, whoever The Other Of Choice is today, and demand ever greater powers to do down The Other on behalf of The People.
This is a tried and trusted playbook used by autocrats through history many times over. He doesn't care if Average Joe is hurting, as long as Average Joe blames Somone Else for that pain and buys what Trump's selling on the basis it might help him out (spoiler: it won't).
Congress has largely forgotten it's there and the judiciary is owned by Trump - the Supreme Court is openly corrupt, accepting holidays and bribes from people with partisan interest in the outcomes of cases - and has already granted him broad criminal immunity. What the actual law and Constitution say is irrelevant.
Globalisation as we thought of it is dead.
Even if something happens tomorrow, and Trump is replaced by someone more "usual", who is ever going to trust America's word on something again? All it takes is one bad election and you can tear up everything they were begging you to sign a few months ahead of time.
He's already socialising the idea of a third term, and there are indeed various ways around term limits (cf Putin).
From our perspective we need to rethink who our friends are pdq. We are a medium-sized island; none of the large powers are ever truly going to be on our side and we should realise that and forge our own path with like-minded nations. Most of the EU plus Canada, maybe S Korea and Japan though that's more of a stretch, idk.
