There has been a real rise in anti-English feeling in Scotland

I'm a Scot by blood, brought up in England but with holidays every year in Scotland and lots of family there. (I used to feel entirely English but am now a bit more confused!)

I noticed throughout the 80s hostility growing towards me because I have an English accent. I honestly think it was connected with Mrs Thatcher - her anti-union policies were felt keenly in the old-fashioned heavy manufacturing industries, and that affected Scotland disproportionately. The Scots have resented the English for a very very long time, but Mrs T seemed to get them going in a major way all over again.

It's obvious why a "minority" nation (in terms of population and economic power) should feel more bitterly and express more loudly its dislike of a perceived "oppressor" nation. It's because they (so they believe) have something to gripe about!
