i've deduced...

a frail mr hackman simply had a fall and died. mrs hackman, distraught with grief, offed herself overdosing on pills in a vasin bid to be reunited with her beloved husband. the dog inadvertently ate some of the pills and also croaked. the other two dogs were locked outside (conjecture your honour! overruled, carry on detective inspector) and thereby avoided any fatal pill gobbling action. verdict: death by misadventure, suicide and accidental canine poisoning. ah, but this fails to address the reported mummification, let's gloss over that for now guvner it's the new york post ffs and crack the scotch out of the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet. case cracked, see you down the battle cruiser.
