Surely an event anyone can do will have a higher standard that one most people never even try?

The most naturally talented golfer / tennis / cricket player likely never even tried it. As compared to say football or running, where more or less everyone (exaggeration) has had a go. Triathlon must be more in the former camp than the latter; it's relatively niche.
