Greaves was injured, so
had Hurst not stepped up to the plate (as the Yanks would say) then it would have just been an unfortunate injury to Greaves which prevented us from progressing.
In Rooney's case it would be different - replacing a well-performing, fit member of the team with another who hadn't played for weeks and was just coming back from injury purely on reputation.
Of course if it happened and he banged in 6 goals and made 4 others in the space of 3 games to win the World Cup then it would make the guy a bigger legend than Ronaldinho !
