Spot of advice, please, from anyone who knows the mid-south-coast?

I live in N. Wales and my daughter has just landed a job in Weymouth. Using roads (and therefore not 'as the crow flies') I reckon it's almost as far away from me as it could be without leaving the civilised mainland: and my daughter and I are really close. So while I'm chuffed that she's done what I've been prompting her to do and left this dying backwater, I'm desolate at the prospect of not seeing my baby so often.

Anyway. All these years I've been urging her to look to move away I've been telling myself that when she goes, I can go too. The question is where to. And when.

Funny thing, parenthood. I'm instinctively aware that I need to let her go off on her own, regardless of my feelings on the matter: so I don't want to just up sticks and move to the same town. Nor do I want to move south immediately: I can offer better financial support from the job I'm in for the time being, and more to the point there's always the slight possibility she'll turn up on my doorstep in three weeks time, crying her eyes out 'cos she hates it down there. Unlikely, but not impossible.

I have friends in Basingstoke and in Horsham so, with my Lyndsey in Weymouth, that'd make Southampton (roughly) equidistant from all three. But all I know about the south coast is that Weymouth seems a nice place and that the view across Portland harbour from the Bill is fantastic - so I don't know which cities/towns/areas are s**tholes/overpriced/good/lovely. It'd need to be an area with good work prospects, as I'd need to be earning more or less straight away - I can turn my hand to pretty much anything, office or factory except Sales or Accounting, so I'm not over worried on that score.
