Sleepers? (yes, wake them up first). I've used them and they work well

Put polythene sheeting down the back to protect the side you can't get at and make sure you oil them in the Spring and at the end of the Summer. The bolts to fix them to each other come with an attachment for your drill. use three per sleeper. Mine have been there for 10 years and are still as good as new.
