We defended much better as a team, front to back, in that season.

We had so much possession, teams struggled to do much more than hoof it at us, which they generally dealt with.

We had skipp shielding the defence expertly, but also he made a huge difference to how we passed out from the back. He always gave the CBs an option and didn’t routinely pass it back to them or to the full backs (which is a big problem now as it gets us penned in and makes our defenders look s**tter at passing out than they actually are).

However, there were still a fair few wobbly moments when teams really went at us at the death, and quite a few unforced errors of the type this season has been littered with.

I still think the main issue to resolve is midfield. If we’re going to pass it out from the back, we need CMs that are comfortable receiving the ball and turning and going forward. Or retaining possession with a simple pass that relieves pressure rather than increasing it. MFs that simply pass back to the CBs / full backs or chipp it aimlessly up the pitch are no good, they increase pressure. I don’t think that player needs to be a midfield general per se, it’s someone like David fox, leitner, skipp (although skipp was perfect in that he combined the two).

Once MF is sorted, defence will immediately appear better too.
