People voted for Bush

Because as much as a lot of people disliked him, they couldn't bring themselves to vote for the characterless, charisma-less, apparently indecisive and generally lacking in any real leadership quality John Kelly. And it just took the missus and I about a minute to think of his name!

Also, according to rumour, Kelly is even more right-wing than Bush. What did he stand for? I got about as far as "He fought in Vietnam and nuked some locals".

It was (at least partially) a case of devil-you-know for a lot of people.
