We used to stay at Jard-sur-Mer for the surfing (or well body boarding in our case)...

and not far from La Rochelle and Ill de Rae, some lovely villages and towns around although perhaps a bit too far south for your trip.

Sarlat and that area is nice though and further north. I just like France generally.
