Blimey, John Peel was a nonce. I didn’t know that. Did you know that?

From the Sunday Times:

“Many feel that Peel hid in plain sight. He admitted having sexual relations with young fans, and once said: “Well, of course, I didn’t ask for ID.” He claimed: “All they wanted me to do was to abuse them sexually which, of course, I was only too happy to do.” Early in his career, Peel married Shirley Anne Milburn, who was just 15, later claiming her parents had lied about her age. In 1989, he said that “girls used to queue up outside [...] I remember one of my regular customers, as it were, turned out to be 13, though she looked older.” In the mid-1970s, Peel wrote a column in the rock music magazine Sounds in which he mentioned that he preferred the company of fans when they were in school uniform. He once dressed as a schoolgirl for a photograph and wrote that he would sit on Primrose Hill in north London watching young girls walk past in their uniforms.”
