He’s just telling people the truth

But it is being presented in an overly dramatic way.

The old paradigm was demand does whatever it likes in energy markets, and our system of cheap fossil fuel fired stations would flex to deliver whatever the customer wants. And in recent years energy has been so cheap that has been possible while keeping bills so low nobody ever thought about them (which is why so many people couldn’t be arsed to switch).

We won’t be able to do that so perfectly anymore, as in the future we won’t be able to use fossil fuels. We will still have dispatchable plant, and there will be storage, but not enough for us all to do whatever we like, and all of that will be much more expensive. So we consumers will need to be more responsive and flexible to what the system has and needs. When the wind blows, cars will need to charge. When it’s still, they will need to stop, or even send charge back. Or we might need fridges that switch off for an hour here and there. To a larger degree, demand will need to do more to follow supply.

So it won’t be like rural India here, with constant black outs and everyone having the candles out. But it will be different. I don’t think it’s anything to panic about though.
