'leaving players to work things out'

That interview was the point at which I thought - this guy doesn't know what he's doing.

It's the style of management I use (at work) personally - but it's a lot of work - you need to really lay out and define the boundaries in which people can use their skills and judgement. You need to constantly negotiate and broker between members of the team (while also showing how they can do that themselves in the future.

You need to spend time with the experienced guys to get them on board with what you're doing and to pick their minds for a cohesive, collective plan. You need to spend time with the younger ones to outline the expectations and ways you expect them to work.

You need to be constantly available if things individually and collectively aren't working.

It's miles better than micromanagement. But it is anything but -'leaving people to sort it out themselves'.

Being generous, I assumed he was paraphrasing. Nevertheless it still rang alarm bells - in order for hands off management to work you need to be a great communicator. Saw no evidence of that in his tenure. Wagner seems an erudite chap.
