A fee belated thoughts on yesterday
Firstly a small bit of credit where due, I thought Smiths changed at half time yesterday improved us, we were the better side second half and looked likely to go on and win it on the balance of play. I also thought Gunn should have saved their first goal which the manager can do nothing about.
However that’s where the credit ends. His position is untenable and if Webber had any humility or decency about him he’d also leave having assembled s squad so devoid of pace and creativity going forward. Unfortunately once again our club has failed to make the patently obvious decision at the time it was needed (and could be seen by all the fans) and wasted 2 months and several valuable games into the process.
I sat right at the front yesterday so had a very close up view of the players for once. What is immediately striking is that (perhaps Kenny and Gibbs aside) they are not putting in the same level of effort as the opposition. I’m not saying they aren’t trying. But that sheer desperation to win the ball or make that block is lacking. Secondly there remains little shape and too often s huge hole in front of our back 4 (or 5) for teams to run into. Thirdly, I really don’t think we look fit. Other teams look fitter and stronger than us, particularly since the break. Fourthly, the marking from set pieces was an utter joke. They must have had free headers on about 6 or 7 occasions, pretty much every time at the far post. They didn’t create a lot in open play but could have had 4 or 5 goals from those situations. Overall snd generally, we just look a really badly drilled and coached side.
The away end was poisonous. This was not a minority. It was most of the away end and by the end it was all of the away end. There are the most loyal fans snd fans who have generally seen the best of us this season. The anti Smith stuff happened as soon as the first free header happened after about 15 minutes. It was too early and at times unecessary for me (for example even just after we equalised) but that is the situation we now have. He will not win fans over and if they don’t change it now then frankly the board are showing utter contempt for the fan base and zero alienation to succeed this season or next.
