Future technology will open up new industries and opportunities, much like it has before.
Let me give you an example.
I work in the mining industry and our site has in the last 18 months gone through a transition to autonomous haulage. So the haul trucks are now completely autonomous, controlled by an algorithm, monitored by humans in a control room 1000kms away.
We have approx 50 trucks on site so at least 50 operators were no longer needed to drive anymore, however what this new technology required was new roles to support it. So now we have field officers, lane builders, field survey teams. Any of the operators who wanted to stay on and retrain in the new roles could and did.
In fact now we have employed more people than we did before but we operate in a lot safer and more consistent environment now which is far more valuable.
