It's typical Smith-speak
Begin with a standard football cliche, then substantiate it with some statements that either contradict the cliche or are irrelevant to it.
His comments on the Boro game were basically a token 'we didn't deserve to lose', followed by reasons explaining exactly why we did deserve to lose.
