There was about 30 minutes that was a lot better than most of the season. Bit the hour between 25 and 85 minutes was pretty turgid for the reasons you identify. When you are not able to progress the ball through the midfield you leave yourself only the flank option. When you then pass it as deep and slowly as we did for spells it becomes easy for the opposition to contain you and force errors.
All that said in fairness to Smith (who I am underwhelmed by still) if Pukki was taking chances in the way he used to wed have probably beaten Shef U, drawn at Burnley and won last night and be 2nd. That’s not a dig at Pukki either, he’s playing well and working hard just having one of those spells where the finishes are not quite working or he’s meeting in form keepers.
