You're looking at it from the wrong perspective

They booted him out, and we got Truss. Who delivered utter chaos and carnage.

There is also the argument that if you're going down anyway, you're better off going down with someone who will give you a softer landing than the rest. Sadly Johnson is probably the one that is most likely to preserve the most number of Tory seats. Even if it's still a drubbing it's not going to be Truss levels. (I don't think it's a slam dunk drubbing under Johnson, sadly)

And the saner wing might be thinking long term: if Johnson comes in and loses, they get to hit the big reset button and distance themselves from his regime. Sunak can hardly lead the rebuild if he is the one to lose the next election, though this is his last shot at the job really so may as well go for it. But Mordaunt's lot will need to decide which candidate gives her the best shot in the future. She might be the kingmaker here.
