The high taxes are due to many things, not only furlough. However, they don't like to

mention some of them:

- cost of Brexit and loss of revenue from industries affected by the loss of a huge trading partner
- sanctions on Russia and consequences of those (including energy)
- cost of military support to Ukraine
- various Covid schemes seemingly created for the sole purpose of being able to utter the (often false) phrase "world leading"
- and of course furlough plus loss of tax revenue from industries impacted by Covid.
- and finally the cost of the massive borrowing (OK, Hunt has now removed some of that but still)

All of the above are not issues which are paid for immediately. Taxes would have to remain high for years from now to even put much of a dent in those costs.

Once can argue that the Tories have been "unlucky" to be in power during the time of Brexit, Covid and the Ukraine-Russia war, but the problem is more their constant knee jerk headline-grabbing drama initiatives, often followed by a u-turn which is extremely inefficient and costs a lot of money for little benefit (if any at all). Obviously they can't really claim misfortune in the case of Brexit.
