England's midfield is key to everything this summer

If Beckham is slowing down, then he isn't going to be able to attack and defend like he used to.

He's going to play alongside Lampard and Gerrard, two players who's defencive abilitys are sadly lacking

Then there's joe cole, who's brilliant going forward, but puts pressure on the team if he loses the ball

If england play a holding playing in Carrick, he will be the scapegoat for the other players that arent doing the right things

This argument that Beckham can't be dropped for his assists, but the same arguement exists for Lampard for his goals, and the same for jo cole for his flair etc and gerrard....

That leaves this summers scapegoat on the 5th midfielder for not doing the dirty work for the stars

Northern Ireland wasn't a one off, it was a wake up call to say that the david beckham long ball isn't going to beat every team
