are you sitting comfortably?
The Carrow Road home of NCFC was initially just the Main Stand (seated with a standing paddock at the front) and the Ground (uncovered terracing on three sides)
Tickets were sold as either Stand (seats), Paddock or Ground (standing) and so there was no need to formally differentiate between the three areas of terrace.
The end nearest the river soon acquired a name.
The Thorpe end had an informal name but this was soon replaced due to the generosity of Capt Barclay.
The other side had no natural landmark and so ended up with its descriptive moniker.
After the '58/9 Cup Run the Supporters Club was awash with cash due to their Pool* (gambling & football, who knew?) and so they coughed up £25k for ground improvements. The terrace opposite the Main Stand was extended and enlarged and had a roof plonked on top.
In August 1959 the recently-completed development was variously referred to as "the new Stand" and "the Supporters' Stand", while in November it was being called "the South Stand".
Arthur South was, by 1960, Vice President of the club and, as a local politico was very involved in the saving of the club in 1956/7, but there is no formal record of the stand being named after him.
And they all lived happily ever after.
* 1959/60 Pool income £80,000 (£2m in today's money). Surplus of £24k
