I have thought about this

but if the air in the loft is already superheated won't the coolest air in that space drop down? (therefore replacing coolish air from the hallway with warm air from the loft)

PS Parents have been doing it longer, and were taught by their parents. Maybe Charles can ask his parents what to do about the lofthatch?
