I took from that article that we 'did' have the funds...

Ajer we didn't want to pay more than £10m because we thought we could pick up him up for free later [why someone thought he was good enough for a PL team but that no other PL teams would snap him up, is a question for another day]

The DM bloke we didn't want to pay £60k to, but ended up paying £60k to a loanee instead

We didn't want to pay over £10m on Ajer but we were nonetheless able to pay around that for Kabak who we wouldn't own [Bailey saying Kabak was one of our highest cost acquisitions]

the money was there, but we didn't trust Farke enough to just spend it on 3 players and preferred to spend it on 6 players.

Captain Hindsight suggests that was the wrong call (although I do recall Ajer getting crocked for a while, which might have happened here and might have been worse here if Farke's training really was that damaging*)

[*On the training-related-injury front, wasn't there a huge large spat on here between one camp saying our injuries were the fault of training and another camp saying that was a stupid conclusion to draw?]
