Xi, has indeed put himself in a difficult position, but the general thinking is that he will honour the request from Putin, but put limits on the amount of help he will agree too, so hoping to put off Western sanctions while still honouring the request from Putin.

The Chineese are probably onlooking at aghast at the mess Putin has put himself in. They will try and steer their neutral stance and hope to not infame further Western tensions.

The Chineese are also trying to guage the sanctions effectiveness, while sitting on the fence.

The problem is also US attention span on this war, if it drags on , and the US has another election, all while the are dealing massive inflation. Who knows who may end up in the white house.... there are so many variables.
