I worked in a Bank a while back. They are not monsters. Talk to them. There will be loads that can be done if you're in trouble - payment holidays, re-scheduling debt etc.
They'd much rather have a customer that engages with them (and pays them back eventually) than someone that ends up defaulting on a loan/mortgage.
StepChange etc are good.
Stay away from pay day loans if you at all can.
