I don't really understand the rationale though.

VAR is applied as a matter of fact to offside decisions (i.e. no clear and obvious error required).

There is a degree of subjectivity here as to whether Godfrey interfered with play, but I think if the linesman flagged for offside and the ref decided he wasn't interfering that would be clear and obvious enough for VAR to intervene.

Following that through, VAR should have looked at it and told the ref godfrey was offside, then asked him to look at the monitor for his view on whether he interfered.

It's pretty obvious the linesman missed the offside.

I know it doesn't matter to the result, but I think it's important that VAR operates fairly and consistently.
