It's all about the money not the sport these days...
I can remember when the Ashes were actually taken seriously as a sporting contest and the touring party would play about a month of warm up 3 or 4 day games against the state sides to get adequately prepared to play long form cricket in Australian conditions. But TV companies won't pay for warm up games so they don't play them any more. They just fly the team in and go straight to the money spinning Ashes matches. The result is that the team is not even remotely prepared for 5 day cricket in Australia and, well, this happens..
