I never lived there
but I spent a couple of decades working with/against/alongside various EU institutions, which saw me in Brussels quite a lot. The lingua franca there is English, but not as we know it. And indeed I found idioms entering my own speech: "...if it would give the possibility to [do something]..." and so on. Bad English? Or adjusting my working vocabulary to make myself more comprehensible and thus communicate better? Or simply laziness after an Orval too many the night before? Honestly, I'm not sure...
