What do you mean by progressive qualities?
He has a track record of improving and developing players (Watkins, Maupay, getting the best out of Grealish). He has usually played football which relies on dominating the ball, with very quick and often high pressing to win in back. He's intelligent in good teams switch into a defensive shape when possession is lost.
I think Smith has a good reputation as a progressive coach. He developed Brentford into a team known for playing fantastic football while loading losing a net spend of almost £90million, setting foundations for their progress into the premier league.
